    In this article in this weeks BMJ, Professor Stiggelbout, Professor of medical decision making at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and his colleagues discuss why shared decision making is important and highlight some examples of best practice.

    Although many clinicians feel they already use shared decision making, research shows a perception-reality gap. In the article Stiggelbout and colleagues explore best practices for implementation, including  patient decision aids and short decision support tools, simple strategies for individual clinicians and debates what the medical profession can do.
