People with multiple long-term conditions account for about 50% of all GP appointments but it has long been recognised that the current 10-minute GP consultation just doesn’t allow enough time to effectively address all their health and wellbeing needs.
To address this problem, the RCGP has been working with C4CC and NHS England to support GPs and primary care teams to develop person-centred approaches, where the conversations shifts from asking ‘what’s the matter with you to ‘what matters to you’.
Under this approach, an integral element of C4CC’s ‘Three Cs’ people will be empowered to take an active role in managing their own health and wellbeing, working alongside GPs and other medical professionals.
A new RCGP video, produced in collaboration with Integrated Personal Commissioning England and the NHS England Personal Health Budget Team, highlights best practice in this area.
