Online Personal Education and Risk Assessment tool for breast and ovarian cancer from Macmillan

Many people worry that they are at a greater than average risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer because of their family history. Macmillan Cancer Support offers an online personal education and risk assessment tool that can help.

OPERA is based on the NICE guidelines for Familial Breast Cancer (CG41). It asks the user specific questions about their personal and family history of breast and ovarian cancer. It then summarises their answers, gives them a ‘personal assessment’, and suggests what they might want to do next.  The assessment includes personalised information and support about their inherited cancer risk.

Usage of OPERA has doubled since 2010. Over 95% of users say they found OPERA to be useful and would recommend it to family or friends who may also be worried about their risk of breast or ovarian cancer.
OPERA was highly commended last year at NICE’s annual Shared Learning Awards, being praised as an excellent example of how NICE guidance can be implemented in practice. It is free to use.
