The Health Literacy Group UK invites you to join them for this one-day joint seminar with the Institute of Health and Society in Newcastle University, where they will focus on the synergies between health literacy and shared decision making (SDM) between clinicians and patients and how this might impact on patient experience and outcomes.
Health literacy is defined as ‘the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health’.
Shared decision making is defined as ‘an approach where clinicians and patients make decisions together using the best available evidence’
This seminar is central to the aims of the Health Literacy Group (UK):
- To build a ‘critical mass’ of stakeholders interested in Heath Literacy (HL) research in the UK
- To share skills, experience and ideas
- To develop the evidence base for Health Literacy
- The seminar will include presentations of ongoing research and practice linking SDM and health literacy, with much opportunity for discussion and debate.
If you are interested in telling them about your work at the seminar, please send a short summary to Kate O’Donnell by 31 March 2013 on firstname.lastname@example.org
Who might attend?
Anyone with an interest in developing the evidence base for the importance of health literacy and patient engagement in decision making. This will include researchers and PhD students working in this or related fields, and health and educational professionals interested in exploring the synergies between health literacy and SDM.
