NHS England has published updated versions of the ‘15 Steps Challenge’ guides designed to improve services from the perspective of patients. The toolkits focus on seeing care through a patient or carer’s eyes and exploring their first impressions.
This includes creating a team, made up of patients, carers, staff and organisation board members, performing ‘walkarounds’ on wards and in services. These teams help to encourage the NHS and patients to work together to spot where improvements can be made.
The 15 steps challenge was inspired by a mother whose daughter needed frequent inpatient stays. She said: “I can tell what kind of care my daughter is going to get within 15 steps of walking on to every new ward.”
