Establishing and running health information services
Introduction
At the end of 2005 PiF ran a workshop at St Thomas’ Hospital on “Establishing and running health information centres” many of the themes emerging from this workshop have been reflected in recent research (Smith et al 2005) such as the need for networking, resources, staffing, training and evaluating the impact of services.
As a result the work of this theme will focus on:
- Raising awareness of the role and contribution of health information centres and services in improving the patient experience
- Sharing knowledge and best practice on the establishment and development of health information services
- Methods of involving patients and the public to ensure health information services best meet their needs
- Producing a range of practical “How to….” guides on aspects of health information service provision
- Working with the sourcing health information theme to highlight policy documents and high quality information resources for patients and the public
Patients’ desire for and right to, information about all aspects of their health, treatment and care is increasingly being recognised (DH 2004a). Provision of this information by health care organisations is a requirement as noted in Core Standards C14 and C16 of the Health and Social Care Standards (DH 2004b).
