What will Local HealthWatch and Healthwatch England look like?

LINks will be abolished and replaced by Local Healthwatch April 1st 2013. A paper from the National Association of LINks members explains what Local HealthWatch and Healthwatch England will look like and explains the intentions of the Health & Social Care Act 2012 in relation to public involvement in health and social care. New roles include that Local HealthWatch will provide advice, information and will support patients to choose the services which best meet their needs. The PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) currently provided by Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) will transfer, with its funding, to the Local Healthwatch.

The aim of the Toolkit is to help the reader undertake effective patient and public involvement (PPI) in health service development, research, policy or commissioning. The toolkit explores making PPI work in a broad range of settings has given them a real insight into the practical steps you can take to ensure success.

Celebrate your best practice by entering the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA 2011). The Patient Experience Network are looking for teams or individuals who have been working on projects, initiatives, or everyday practice methods which have made a real difference to patient experience and deserve recognition for their work. Awards categories include those for Communicating effectively with patients and families and Access to Information. The deadline for entries has been extended to October 31st 2011.

The Patient Experience Network (PEN) has announced the launch of the 2011 Awards. These are dedicated national awards for healthcare organisations working to improve patient experience. The categories are based around core domains of patient centred care. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on September 19th.

Experience-based co-design toolkit

This toolkit, launched this week by the Kings Fund, outlines a powerful and effective way of improving patients' experience of services, and helps you assess how it can help you meet your aims. Experience-based co-design (EBCD) can improve services in a way that really makes a difference to patients and service users. It captures the experiences of patients, carers and staff through discussion, observation and filmed interviews. The toolkit contains a wide range of resources and is a step by step guide to experience based design, from making the case to staff, editing film and running co-design groups.

INVOLVE is a national advisory group which supports greater public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research. They are looking for new members to their our Working Groups. Applicants will have a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and research interests, but will all have an understanding and experience of public involvement in research. Patients, carers and voluntary group representatives are encouraged to apply.

Transforming Patient Experience Conference

This King's Fund conference will showcase the best of the Point of Care Programme and highlight that the key to improving patients' experience of care is staff experience of delivering care. The conference will also emphasise the importance of making patients' experience a priority alongside clinical quality. The conference will hear from staff from the front line, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and managers, who have been working with the Point of Care Programme team over the past two years, to show us that service transformation for patients is possible. The conference takes place in London on November 9th.

Experience Based Design (EBD) Resources

Experienced based design (ebd) is a way of bringing patients and staff together to share the role of improving care and re-designing services. It is being developed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as a way of helping frontline NHS teams make the improvements their patients really want. The Institute has a collection of useful resources, including a short video explaining how EDB works, a guide and toolkit and a series of case studies that give real-life examples of EBD and the difference it has made.

The BMA's Patient Liaison Group (PLG) provides the BMA with an informed patient view on matters of interest to the profession and to patients. The PLG has developed a toolkit for GPs and Practice Managers on Patient and Public Involvement, designed to help Consortia to meet the requirements for public involvement in commissioning.
