Libraries survey on Health Projects

This survey of NHS libraries across South East Coast Strategic Health Authority (SEC SHA) explored health and wellbeing projects and initiatives in the region, with an emphasis on the provision of health information to patients and carers. Key recommendations included library services should work to overcome any barriers to providing health information, and training should be provided to assist library staff to develop their understanding of health and wellbeing information that is suitable for patients and carers.

123 members took part in the PiF membership survey this year- or as it's now called, 'PiF Pulse'. The aim of the membership survey was to get a clear picture of consumer health information in the UK and to help us develop membership benefits. A summary of the results and comments are available to download from the PiF web site.
Research: Web-based Interventions and Patient Empowerment

Due to the increasing possibilities of the Internet and eHealth, many initiatives that are aimed at empowering patients are delivered online. The objective of this research was to evaluate whether Web-based interventions are effective in increasing patient empowerment compared with usual care or face-to-face interventions. The authors concluded that Web-based interventions showed positive effects on empowerment. However, because of the low quality of evidence found, the results should be interpreted with caution.
Training event: Making Information Accessible

CHANGE is a national human rights organisation, campaigning for equal rights for all people with learning disabilities. They are running training sessions on making information accessible - the sessions are delivered by professional trainers with a learning disability. The training takes place in Leeds on 25 June and 30 July 2010.

Essex County Council has a new website that gives the support and knowledge so that anyone in Essex can communicate with people with learning disabilities. The website, which is in itself accessible to people with learning disabilities, contains resources like photographs and images and video clips of people demonstrating common signs to help people with learning difficulties.
