New information leaflet about problem gambling
Many of us like to place the odd bet or play the lottery – but for about 6 people in every 1000, gambling can become a problem.
The new leaflet is for anyone who is worried about their gambling, and is also helpful for those who might be worried about a friend or relative. The leaflet explains what type of help is available, and provides advice on living with a problem gambler.
‘Problem gambling’ – along with many other mental health information leaflets – can be downloaded for free from the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ website: www.rcpsych.ac.uk
British Sign Language leaflets
The Royal College of Psychiatrists has translated ten of its Mental Health and Growing Up factsheets into British Sign Language (BSL).
Topics include: Coping with stress, Depression in young people, Psychotic illness, Understanding autism, When bad things happen, Drugs and alcohol, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Stimulant medication, Worries and anxiety, Good parenting.
They are aimed at adults who look after children - especially parents and teachers – and are also helpful for young people who may be concerned about themselves or a friend.
The translation project was co-ordinated by child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr Andy Holwell and deaf advisor Herbert Klein, who both work for National Deaf Services at St George’s Hospital, University of London. The clips were produced in association with AC2.com Productions Ltd.
Mr Klein said: “I am so pleased that deaf children and teenagers are able to access website information about personal problems translated into BSL. It is important to help prevent such issues leading to more serious mental health problems or illness. Inequality of access to information and resources compounds health inequalities and projects such as this help support equality.”
The BSL video clips are freely available on the RCPsych website: www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealthinfo/mentalhealthandgrowingup.aspx
