PiF Profile

Katrina Glaister

  • Member of the PiF Advisory Group
  • Trust Lead for Patient Information, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

Katrina’s first interest in patient information began when she joined the Wiltshire Research Ethics Committee some 10 years ago, first as a nurse member and then as Chair.  At this time she began to realise the importance of the written word and the need for all information to be written such that the reader can understand it.

In her role as Clinical Governance Facilitator for Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, she built on work that had began earlier in the Trust, moving patient information up the Trust’s agenda and strengthening policies so ensure that all written patient information goes through a rigorous quality assurance process before being approved for use in the Trust.  The Trust is one of first acute trusts to be accredited under the Information Standard..

With around 800 pieces of written information now on the Trust’s database, Katrina is working on producing accessible patient information and is working with a group of learning disabled adults; facilitating the writing of new patient information sheets that meet the needs of this population.

Whilst most of her work has been involved with written patient information, she has also been involved in producing DVDs for patients.

Katrina is very keen for clinicians to involve their patients in the writing of patient information so that the information produced answers the questions that the patients have, rather than answering the questions that clinicians think that patients have.
