Some definitions
What do we mean by 'patient' and 'information'?
We are often asked exactly what we mean by 'patient' and 'information' so here, in the context of the Patient Information Forum, are some definitions. We would welcome feedback on these. Please email president@pifonline.org.uk with your comments.
- The term ‘patient’ is used in its widest possible sense to encompass all who interact with health information; it includes people with long term conditions, expectant mothers, school children, carers, and those receiving health promotion messages. Nor do we wish to suggest any passivity on the part of the ‘patient’.
- ‘Information’ includes paper, verbal and electronic delivery channels. We are also keen to look at the settings in which such information is delivered, and the skills of those involved in the two-way transmission and receipt of such information.
