News > Accessibility and usability

A survey of NHS libraries across South East Coast Strategic Health Authority (SEC SHA) was carried out between December 2009 and January 2010.

The survey was designed to capture health and wellbeing projects and initiatives in the region, with an emphasis on the provision of health information to patients and carers. The survey identified many areas of good practice across the region but found that several library services were hampered by a lack of resources and funding. There are many examples of good practice in partnership working across the region.

The recommendations of the survey are that:

  • There should be a minimum level of service identified for patients and carers
  • Library services should be encouraged in their efforts to provide health information to patients and carers
  • Library services should work to overcome any barriers to providing health information to patients and carers
  • Library services should foster partnership links to library services in other sectors
  • Training is provided to assist library staff to develop their understanding of health and wellbeing information that is suitable for patients and carers.
